The Nancy Stacpoole Why? Award for 2009 was awarded to Nuoi V N in appreciation for sharing his expertise and giving his time generously, helping and encouraging other members to develop their bonsai knowledge and skills.

Mick and Greta A<br /> Life membership was conferred on Mick and Greta A for their contribution to the club over the many years of their membership. Mick was Treasurer for two years during the 1980s. Mick and Greta have both been active participants in the running of our annual show, Mick usually on the entry desk and Greta as manager of catering. Together, they have managed the catering for club meetings for many years. Mick and Greta have also promoted the aims of the club through the help they have given over 5 years, in conjunction with school staff, in bonsai classes at a local high school. <br /> <br />

<br /> Life membership was conferred on Jim M for his leadership and extensive contribution to the club as President (1997 to 2005), committee member and show manager for most years since the late 1980s, demonstrations at club meetings, annual show and Floriade, and newsletter contributor. Our club grew significantly in its strength and profile during Jim&rsquo;s leadership. Jim is a long-standing AABC delegate and during Jim's presidency the club hosted the 2004 AABC Convention and co-sponsored initiation of the Australian Native Plants as Bonsai exhibition as the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Jim is also a member of the Bonsai Management Committee for the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia.<br /> <br />

This Lilly pilly smithii tree was shown to the members by Lorraine V H.&nbsp; It was grown from seed collected from Tomakin, NSW in 2004. It has been repotted three times since germination andusually pruned at the same time, with an extra tip pruning about mid autumn.

Tree name: Leptospermum 'Daydream'&nbsp;&nbsp; Year: 2006<br /> &nbsp;It is a cross between Leptospermum 'Cardwell' and Leptospermum 'Rhiannon' . Hence it cannot be found in the wild as it is a hybrid. Flowers come in late october or early november.

Michael T's Show and Tell Leptospermum 'Daydream'
Melaleuca species, probably M. linariifolia. Originally bought from a landscape supplier as a leftover &ndash; tall and scraggly with all branches near the top. I tried an aerial layer but the roots were not well developed when I removed it and it did not survive. I cut the trunk down to under 10cm and after some time it shot prolifically just below the cut. I removed most shoots, keeping seven at the about the same level and evenly spaced; one of these did not survive, so now I have two odd numbers &ndash; five and one. The one is in danger of becoming too dominant so I am trying to restrain its growth. For the first few years I grew the branches on then cut back hard to build up the foliage clouds. Every now and then I have to &lsquo;refresh&rsquo; this treatment, as I did last spring. I quite like this Australian native broom style.
