Jim&rsquo;s Hokkaido elms both came from Ray Nesci&rsquo;s Bonsai Nursery. The larger tree was&nbsp;bought in 1997&nbsp;and has only been in a bonsai pot since 2000, while the mini was bought in 1988, and has been a bonsai since 1989. <span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Helvetica">The beautiful flowers on Michael&rsquo;s Chaenomeles provide an interesting contrast to the bare branches. Chaenomeles are very hardy and provide welcome colour over winter</span><!--EndFragment-->

<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Helvetica">The fine branching of Pomegranates provides a delicate winter skeleton after the colourful flowers and fruit during spring to autumn. Ruth&rsquo;s Chaenomeles has been developed by clip and grow, a technique to which it responds well.</span><!--EndFragment-->

<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Helvetica">Roger&rsquo;s <i>Nothofagus antarcticus</i></span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Helvetica"> is a native of southern South America (S Argentina and Chile).&nbsp; The genus is especially interesting because it is one of the major ones that helped underpin the concept of Gondwana and continental drift.&nbsp; There are <i>Nothofagus</i></span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Helvetica"> species in S. America, New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia and New Guinea.&nbsp; This species is relatively uncommon in its native habitat.&nbsp; It is deciduous, producing bright green new leaves in spring, which by autumn turn yellows, reds and oranges.&nbsp; It grows well with bonsai treatment</span><!--EndFragment-->

Reticulation is a bit rudimentary at this stage and styling is pretty conventional, but I am looking forward to seeing it after another year&rsquo;s design and development work in the fertile surroundings of the central coast.</span><!--EndFragment-->

The original upright trunk was removed about five years ago and major branches cut off or shortened to give a stump. New branches were then trained in clip and grow until one year ago when it was intensively wired and &ldquo;wiggle wired&rdquo; or compressed. It will be a chunky medium size bonsai with a sort of semi cascade strong lower branch.<o:p></o:p></span> </p> <!--EndFragment-->
